French River Snowmobile Club

Today’s French River Snowmobile Association club area is the melding of the former French River Snow-Devils and French River Snow Voyageur territories. The founder of the French River Snow Devils, the late Gerry Bedard initiated and developed 19km of trail from the Beausejour Hotel (now known as Riverdale Resort) to Noelville by the use of his own double track and mattress springs! Soliciting support, dedicated volunteers expanded this trail to connect the two small communities and receive acceptance into the OFSC.

1990 marked the inauguration of the dedicated and enthusiastic French River Snow Voyaguers. It’s initial mandate was to develop a trail system connecting the French River to the exisiting Alban area trail, a total of eight kilometres. Evolving from a dozen members, the French River Snowmobile Association continuted to develop and expand the trail systems connecting the Parry Sound area to trails in Sudbury and Killarney. This task proved a challenge and success for the club as a unique shuttle system of transportation was intiated in order to complete the C Trail under their jurisdiction.

Today French River is home of the largest snowmobile bridge of its kind in the world. In November 2001, the first of two cable supported snowmobile bridges was ready for volunteers to deck. In what could be described as an engineering masterpiece, the Pickerel River Bridge spans 256ft across the river, with a total length of 420’ including the approaches. In September 2004, volunteers once again lent a hand driving over 8000 6” spikes on the clear span French River Snowmobile Bridge. This remarkable bridge is 512' long, 12' wide and sits nearly 90' above the water. It can carry a modern industrial trail grooming machine or over 100 snowmobiles at a time. The bridge offers spectacular views overlooking the river and gorge which is now a world renowned designated site by UNESCO within the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve.
